Looking to adopt a new dog or puppy, rescue or purchase- things to consider:
1. Chose wisely, research the breed and make sure you know what you may be getting involved in; two examples-A. Miniature Poodle, teeth are a major issue, they must be brushed and maintained daily since they are prone to developing bad teeth often at an early age and often needing yearly professional teeth cleaning at $350+ and possible tooth or teeth extracted! B. Large breed dog, fun now but when they get old their hips tend to give out and they are heavy and can you take care of them, get them in a car, bath them etc.
2. Family considerations, are the kids old enough for a dog, if getting a large dog for them, they the children can be knocked down by a rambunctious dog, so they need to be old enough and not fearful if it happens.
3. Rescues: Know who you are dealing with, organization, foster, or private individual. Get as much info about the dog as possible, examine it's temperament, realize that a rescue may have some issues, be prepared to address them properly through training, vet visits what ever.
4. Purchasing a dog or puppy: try to get as much info on the breeder, ask for references others who have adopted a puppy from that breeder, check to see if they are reputable, have been around for awhile, how do they breed, visit if at all possible to see for yourself the condition of the puppies and get to pick your puppy out in person. Some breeders are puppy mills, often over breeding their "stock". Some people pretend to be the breeder when all they are is a go between purchasing pups from puppy mills.
5. The research you do today will pay off in the end in so many ways.
6. You are adopting a dog, make sure you can afford the commitment for the life of the dog. Spend the necessary money to ensure they stay healthy it is good for the dog and in the end less costly than if you only address problems as they may arise. Yearly vet visits are essential so too is proper grooming whether by you or a professional like ourselves. Be aware that some breeds need to be groomed more frequently than others & be prepared for that expense. Regular grooming is also essential in maintaining the overall health of the dog. A matted dog promotes sores underneath and eventually a costly vet visit followed up by regular grooming.
We wish everyone who adopts a pet the best and many happy years to come with your most loyal and faithful friend!
